rui jun luong (she/her) is a multidisciplinary designer, artist and photographer. founder of the foundation asian raisins. her graduation project is a ‘guess who?’ game with only portraits of asian people. guess who: asian edition. the life-size game has exhibited at oba amsterdam and traveled with the theatershow ‘de bananengeneratie’. the card game is available for purchase in three different versions. the game has won gold at the dutch creativity awards 2022.
why do you think it is important that role models need to be visible?
growing up in friesland, i did not see any role models in the media. in my childhood, i have faced racism and discrimination that made me feel ashamed of my culture and identity. i internalised the racism and distanced myself from everything about my culture and identity. years went by and after researching about my own history and roots i have realised that it’s not how it should be, it’s not okay. i took the power in my own hands, used my voice and created my own stage and like-minded people. so people don’t have to deal with what i and many others have been through.
