about
i am a professor of population health at the leiden university medical center and the scientific director of the health campus the hague, a living lab where researchers from various disciplines work together on population health challenges. my research group focusses on identifying vulnerable groups with the aim of offering targeted prevention initiatives. in addition to the impact of nutrition and lifestyle, my team studies the social and physical environment, including (eco)syndemics and life course processes that impact health trajectories. my career began with a bsc degree in clinical dietetics, followed by msc in health sciences and a phd on early life nutrition at erasmus mc. after that i worked as a senior researcher and assistant professor, supervising several phd trajectories in epidemiology and global public health education. outside work, i very much enjoy power workouts, spinning, nature, and playing the flute.
what qualities do you think are essential for success?
as a leader, i believe authenticity is ke, staying true to your values while remaining open to continuous learning and growth. it is also important to make a conscious effort to reflect on your actions, assessing their impact on others and identifying areas for improvement. equally important is perseverance: staying focused and motivated, even when faced with challenges. to me, leadership isn’t just about personal success. it’s about fostering the growth and well-being of those around me. in such a way you can create an environment of trust and open collaboration, where everyone can thrive.
