women remain underrepresented in the tech and analytics field. on average, a third of our department is female, which is good, but there is room for improvement. naturally, we strive for fifty percent.
we believe diversity in teams is crucial: these teams perform better, foster more innovation, and contribute to a more inclusive culture. fortunately, we have highly enthusiastic and ambitious female tech members here at the lotteries. we believe sharing their stories will make a difference. we hope this campaign will inspire more women to pursue careers in tech, and we wholeheartedly invite them to come join our tech departments.”

about
my name is anne-may and i’m product owner at the postcode loterij & vriendenloterij. i’ve been working here for ten years, but i never thought i would end up in tech. i avoided math like the plague in high school, but during my studies i realised i had a knack for statistics. this has been the common thread throughout my career. i still wouldn’t describe myself as a real techie though. i love working at the intersection of technology and marketing. enabling this organisation to work more data-driven and make a bigger impact in this world is what drives me.
why is international women’s day important for you?
right now, the team i work with is about 60% male and 40% female. what stands out to me though is the fact that women usually work in specific roles. that’s not necessarily a bad thing, because we are different and it’s about a person’s qualities and what makes them happy. but i do think it’s important that there is a mix. having both male and female experts around a table creates different conversations than a meeting with only male coworkers. women might look at certain issues differently. the effectivity of such a mix shows that diversity stimulates innovation.
if i stay in my own bubble, i catch myself thinking that the whole emancipation process is pretty much done. here at the postcode loterij & vriendenloterij, it’s barely noticeable. there are more women than men, and even our ceo is a woman! however, if i take one step outside of that bubble i am reminded of the importance of this conversation. in many organisations, pay gaps remain an issue, and men are more often chosen for higher functions. that’s why a diversity initiative is so important, because it forces people to deviate from that outdated thinking pattern.
i think that’s why international women’s day is vital. even people like me, who are not confronted with gender inequality daily, sometimes forget how relevant these issues still are. this day reminds us that it still very much needs to be a topic of conversation.
