user verification lead at bunq
about
hey! i’m nika. i joined bunq as a kyc agent with barely any kyc experience. four years later, i now lead both the user verification and user review teams, with a total of around 50 people. it still feels a bit unreal!
my life strategy is to “do first, overthink later.” paired with bunq’s culture, that mindset turned out to be the right formula for growth. i learn by doing, i’m not afraid to try things before they’re perfect, and i care a lot about building things that actually work—for users and for teams.
today, my teams and i focus on giving users access to banking within 5 minutes, while keeping everything fully compliant and safe. being user-centric, growth-driven, and stubborn about what i believe in has turned curiosity into a career, and work into something i genuinely care about.
what advice would you give to your younger self?
when i was younger, i was afraid of failure. i wouldn’t share my opinions, worried they might be controversial. when things worked out, i called it luck, not yet connecting my own effort with overcoming obstacles.
now i know growth only comes from leaving your comfort zone and taking ownership. without trying, the answer is always no, but the moment you try, it could be yes.
so whatever you want to become, go for it. give it your best. if it works, celebrate the win; if not, celebrate the lesson. remember: the only real regrets are the chances you never took.
